The stories we tell ourselves

Why is it that many times when we want to do something that is in uncharted territories for us, we talk ourselves out of it? The stories we tell ourselves about the big bad wolf waiting on the other side hinders us from doing potentially some of our most amazing work. We try to think of things that would need to be perfect PRIOR to us making things become a reality - which most often leaves us not doing anything. We leave things on the table or even just in our mind because we think that it could never be as good as something else that someone else could offer.

One thing that I have been wanting to put together for over a year is an active Facebook group for coaches that has nothing to do with actually coaching our respective sports. I want a group for all coaches where they can come together just to be and get better as people. I think as coaches we want our players to be the best they can be but we don’t do enough for ourselves to be the best we can be. I hear and have said often that when players come to me, if they don’t leave better as people (even if they were already good people), then I’m not doing my job. Well why don’t we take that on as coaches. In one year’s time, if we don’t become better as people throughout that year, we’re not doing our job. Many people would admit they believe “there’s always room for growth”, but when it comes down to it we are only trying to improve our on the court skills. WHY IS THAT?? Any coach that has been coaching at least for a week, knows that coaching is 90% off the court! So why is that we focus so intently only on becoming better coaches of our on the court skills? We have now got to the point where we are understanding that our respective games have a mental aspect to it that our players need to start working on - which is great! Now we have to understand that there is huge off the court training that us as coaches need to start doing! When I say off the court training, some coaches may be getting somewhat defensive and think to themselves “No, I go to clinics - which clearly is off the court”. Unless that clinic is working on how you can become a better human being, this is not what I am talking about. So, I am going to stop telling myself these stories about the group that I want to create, and I am going to create this group. If you are interested in joining, I would highly recommend it - yes I’m biased - lol. See you there!
